Been a while since you have written your post. Well I knew of a Dan Wheeler and eskimo, he was my grandparents good friend. Their is a plaque of him (small wooden one) at the cleaning docks in Seward Alaska. I remember him as well he was a barrel chested fellow whom always had on jean farmer type overalls. He passed away a while ago of a heartattack. I remember him being good with animals, I was a kid all I knew is my dogs hated everyone and would not hesitate to bite the hell out of anyone but not him they where chums. Seems like the book you may be looking for is Eskimo and His Reindeer by C L Andrews still available at abebooks.com. Andrews was a teacher long ago and head of the dept of education before BIA took over in 1934 on the western side of Alaska. GOOD LUCK if you need any more info email a guy. Or if this is even the right Wheeler you may check the Jesse Lee home in Seward a lot of kids like Dan went there cause his family and relatives may have been wiped out by TB. He was not from seward Ak though I belive him to be from the western part of the state. My grandparents are Inupiaq he may have been one as well.
