A private service in Cordova is planned.
Mr. Babic was born Aug. 8, 1929, in Latouche, on Latouche Island near Chenega, to Leona and Mike Babic, who worked in the mines there. They moved to Cordova in 1932.
He lived in Cordova until the mid 1940s, when he moved to Snohomish, Wash., where he graduated from high school. He then joined the U.S. Air Force. In 1951, he returned to Cordova to fish salmon with his father.
Mr. Babic married Beverly Siemion of Cordova on April 14, 1955.
Mr. Babic fished in many fisheries during his lifetime, but the Copper River remained his passion. He gillnetted for more than 50 years on the Copper River. He took pride in the boats he built, some of which are still around Cordova.
His family wrote: "Jack was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He loved to spend time with his family, especially the grandkids. We all will miss our 'Papa' very much. His daughter said the best gift she ever got was her father."
He is survived by his children, Russell and Jack Babic of Cordova and Tawnia Sullivan of San Mateo, Calif.; and grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Christine, Kayley, Jessica and Ben, all of Cordova.
His ashes will be scattered in the places he loved around Cordova.
