I don't know where Kathleen got her info from but in Ancestry.com under "U.S., Headstone Applications for Military Veterans, 1925-1963" it lists much the same info. Additionally it indicates he was buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Shamokin and that the body was shipped to his mother Estella. It also shows he served not only during WWII but many years after.
The 1930 census of Shamokin shows a Robert 9 as the son of Ernest Owens 37, born in England and Estella 31 born in PA.
