The Matanuska Valley Colony was a 'New-Deal' program that began in the mid 1930s and brought farm families to Alaska to relocate in hopes of starting a viable agriculture program. It was relatively successful. Horse shoeing would have been a needed skill at that time. Search 'Matanuska Valley Colony'.. I'm not sure what is online about it. The Mat-Su Borough does have an historical society, however, check Genweb if you don't find it elsewhere.
