A copy of my gfather's marriage record has him married in ME: Dell Lenor Estel MAYSE, b. San Francisco 11 Mar 1884. Dell's father was Andrew L. MAYSE, b. San Diego, mother: Anette GIRAID?, b. San Francisco. Dell had 4 older brothers, and 3 older sisters. Andrew was a captain of a square rigger sailing vessel, and as a boy, Dell sailed around the world with his father several times. Dell ran away at age 14. Andrew died about 1898, shipwrecked off the Aleutian Islands. Dell's death record lists his father as George - not Andrew. Some stories Dell told of his life: Spent 14 years aboard ships. Was shipwrecked once, and was the only survivor on a barren island, was rescued just a skeleton, and was put on exhibition in NY. Riding in a dark boxcar as a hobo, lit a match and saw a man hanging there, jumped from the car into a river. In another boxcar, he was kicked off in the desert, became delirious, woke up in someone's house. Worked with his uncle in South America on his plantation. Got together with one of his brothers and panned for gold in Alaska. He and his brother also started a pig farm in southern U.S., and bears got the pigs. Worked building the Panama Canal. Spent a winter with a Penobscot Indian in Old Town, ME trapping animals. Lied about his age and joined up to fight the Spanish American war in the Philipines. They discovered he was 14, and kicked him out. Hoping someone will recognize the stories and so find a common ancestor. Possibly George was the name of Dell's brother, and not his father. I have no names for Dell's siblings.
Does anyone know how to find Andrew's death record, being shipwrecked in the Aleutians?
Dell's marriage record of 1909, listed his father as dead, and his mother as residing in Merced, CA. Haven't had any luck with the census. And the birth records were supposedly burned in the SF fires.
