Dear Barbour County List, Our family owns an Eastlake walnut Bedroom Suit, sold by and probably built by Jacob Ramser & his sons.On the back of one of the high back wooden beds there remains part of a label [paper] which has: J. Ramser's Sons, Mammoth Furniture Store, Eufaula, Ala.
I am writing a report on this furniture. It includes information on the Ramser family & their furniture store. They are referenced in the History of Barbour County & History of Eufaula, Alabama.
While researching, I read the information posted on this list in 2000 by Brenda McNiel Graves, gggranddaughter of Jacob Ramser. She wrote that she was told that her great-g-grandfather Jacob was Mayor of Eufaula at one time & his picture hangs in the Shorter Mansion.
I would appreciate any information on the Furniture Store in Eufaula & the Jacob Ramser family.
I located the following: 1893 billhead, sold on E-Bay in 2010: ‘JACOB RAMSER'S SONS, Eufaula, Ala.’ This would be J. Ramser's Sons. I surely wish that I had seen their billhead displayed online.
I have also located quite a few newspaper articles from the 1800s that reference Jacob Ramser and family members, with some details about his business. This should be of interest to those researching the history of Irwinton/Eufaula.
I will be happy to exchange information.
Thanks to all with any information, Eugenia Hobdayebhjibby@gmail.com _______________________________________ From: "John Graves" Subject: McNIEL--RAMSER Family surnames Date: Sun, 27 Feb 2000 Dear Barbour County List, Looking for any info on these surnames. JACOB RAMSER was my great-great-grandfather. He married ANNA MARIA SINGER. Their daughter was PAULINE RAMSER; there was about eight other children of this union. PAULINE, my great-grandmother married DANIEL McNIEL, Oct. 28th, 1869. Their first born was my grandfather, Ursus Wm. McNIEL. Are there still RAMSER's or McNIEL's in the area? Would very much like to find out who DANIEL's parents were. Was told my gg-grandfather JACOBwas Mayor of Eufaula at one time. JACOB RAMSER, my grgrgrandfather, had a brother named URSUS RAMSER who was a cabinet maker, a craft learned and brought over from their homeland in Switzerland. [Note:“Ursus Ramer, Eufaula's first photographer. He made beautiful daguerreotypes”.] My Uncle Ursus never married, but my grandfather, URSUS WILLIAM McNIEL was named after him. PAULINE RAMSER, JACOB and MARY daughter, married DANIEL McNIEL/McNEILL. Let me know if you E-V-E-R come across anything on DANIEL or his family! This is my maiden name, any family info before DANIEL remains a mystery. Sincerely, Brenda McNIEL Graves
