Green R. Smith was born 1844 in Bibb, GA (per his pension application), parents names unknown. He was living with James Russell Hill & Eliza A. Hill and family in Eufaula, Barbour Co., Al in 1850 and 1860. On Ancestry.com his name is transcribed as "Gran" Smith on one of the censuses.
Is someone willing to do a lookup for me in a book about the History of Wilkinson Co. GA, by a Mr. Maddox? A researcher once said that she found something about some Smith's drowning in or near MS and that the children were sent to live with Hill relatives in AL, and I believe she referred to that book. The time frame would be between 1844-1850.
A breakthrough came this week when I read a deposition for the widow's pension application for Eliza A. Hill in Grayson, TX - written by my gggrandfather G.R. Smith of Wood Co., TX. He stated that he met the Hill family in about 1850 and lived with them until the war broke out, and that Eliza partially raised him. I was ecstatic! Finally, proof that our Green was the one living with the Hill family. Why he was living with them and their relationship, I may never know.
He and wife Mary Emiline Brown married AL c. 1867. J.R. Hill andfamily were in Panola, TX in 1870. Green Russell Smith-known as G.R. bought land in Smith and Wood Co., TX. He and Molly are buried Sand Springs Cemetery in Wood Co., TX. Children: Ruby and William J. R. were born in AL; Samuel, Charlie, Green Doss, Arthur, Bertha, Myrtie May, Belle and Laura- born Texas.
Any help/ideas/connections appreciated.
