Hi, I'm from Texas and my paternal great-grandfather, Winston C. Waid/Wade was from Blount Co., Alabama. He left Alabama sometime after 1870, came to Texas and settled in Ellis Co. He married Mary Jane Chance (from Milam Co., Texas) and is listed on the 1880 census, occupation "farmer". He and Mary had two children, Annie (my paternal grandmother) and Houston Harvey Wade. These children were orphaned at an early age and were raised by Mary Jane's mother in Milam Co. As to what happened to Winston and Mary Jane? I have been researching this for about 3 years and have still have not found out. I can find no death or burial record for either one of them. I've looked in Texas and Alabama. So who knows? In Texas, death records were not required by counties until 1903 and even then were inconsistently submitted for a while. As to what was the attraction for these individuals coming to Texas--Winston was the youngest of a long line of brothers (nothing left to inherit) and also the South at that time probably did not hold much of a future for the young. On the other hand, life in Texas was no cakewalk either. Please let me know if I can help any way with your research. Happy hunting!
