I had a chance to visit Cherokee County back in the 90's and enjoyed the warm hospitality at the courthouse and the local library.Though I too was shocked to see many of the original records piled against the wall in the attic of the store (museum) near the courthouse. From land records to pension records, I was gratefully allowed to dig through all and witnessed their being being carried away by varment and bugs.
I hope the museum is working to protect the records, to stablize their decay, and to make it possible for the information to be retrieved for recopying a hundred years from now. Microfilm does decay in a fairly short time.
It would be my hope that all original court records beyond a certain age be held at the state level in one location where their safety is paramount. I know in these hard times that is likely not a possibility. People many years from now will thank us or think of us in regret for what we do.
