I am researching the family of Samuel J. Smith and his wife, Elizabeth Satterwhite, and their children: 1.Archibald 2.Mary 3.George 4.Nancy 5.Elizabeth 6.William 7.Margaret 8.Derrell Malcom 9.MARTHA 10. Amanda 11. Sarah
I am especially interested in the 9th child, MARTHA Smith. In the 1880 census of Santa Rosa Co., Florida(this area is now known as Okaloosa Co., Florida), MARTHA Smith was listed as SINGLE, but with two young sons. There was NO father listed, and the father's place of birth was listed as "not known".... This seems to indicate that MARTHA may have been a possible victim of some kind. Her oldest son, Allen D. (Derrell) Smith was 6 yrs. old, and his brother, Agustus (Gus) was 2 yrs. old.Allen D. was my g-grandfather.He is rumored to have been 12 or 14 Native American. Could any descendants of Samuel J. Smith offer any info or clues about Martha's story??? Many of Samuel's children, including Mary, moved into Covington Co., AL. and had families. My g-granduncle, Gus, was found living between Derrel Malcom Smith and his son, Samuel Oscar Smith in the 1900 Covington Co., AL. Hart District census. This would seem to indicate that Gus was a 1st cousin to Samuel O., and the nephew of Derrell Malcom.
Other surnames of this family being researched include: Barrow, Baggett, McLellan, Morrison, Post, Stewart, Cook, York.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.......Gerald Lagunaz7@tds.net
