Hi, I have been trying to find an Eli Laird b. 1844 in SC.He married a Delilah 'Lela' (Gilcrease) Gilchrist before 1868 prob. in AL.She was born 27 Jul 1846 in AL, daughter of William (Gilcrease) Gilchrist and Lucinda unknown.
I believe Eli Laird and his parents/siblings may have been in the Covington Co., AL area.I do not have their names, but only some 1850 & 1860 census data which may hold clues.
The only Eli Laird I could find that comes close to a match is an "Eli Laird (Powel)" with the Stephen & Elizabeth Powel family in 1850 Covington Co., AL Census. On the orig. census, it shows an Eli Larid b. 1845 SC, below him is Martha Laird b. 1848 SC and a Susannah Laird b. 1744 NC. I'm pretty sure this is the Eli Laird I'm looking for.Susannah must be Eli and Martha's grandmother.
Then on the 1860 census, Martha Laird and grandmother? Susannah Laird are found with Elizabeth Powell (widowed) in Covington, AL - same family. Eli would have been about 15 years of age (couldn't find him). However, I did find a Eli "Law" in Covington, AL in 1860 with an H.B. Handley.Looking at the original census, it could be Eli Laird (the 'w' could be a 'd'). It fits his age and he was born in SC. Also on the 1860 Covington, AL census, I find a Lewis Laird b. 1834 SC with a Zachariah Owen family, and a William Laird b. 1849 SC with a Henry Merrill family.
Is it possible that Eli, Martha, Lewis and William are siblings living with various family members in Covington, AL?It seems possible since they are within the approx. age range and they all were born in SC.I know from census data, that Eli Laird lists his parents as both born in SC.
Does anyone have any info. on any of these families mentioned, I am at a dead end! -------------
Eli Laird and Delilah moved between 1870-1879 to Falls Co., Tx and remained there.
