I got an email from Ted Sorrells in 2002 where he said that John "came home while he was en route to Florida and on to England and he gave Granny a silver dollar and ask her to save it for him until he returned."
The MIA telegram to John's parents was dated 15 May 1944 and the telegram informing them he was dead was dated 15 Sept 1944.On 14 Oct 1949, his father Dalton signed the form authorizing the US government to inter Johnin a permanent American military cemetery overseas.(This is now the Ardennes American Cemetery.)John was buried there on 11 Apr 1950; the American flag that draped his coffin was sent to Dalton the next day.
You may be comforted to know that on every April 29 since 2004, when the memorial was dedicated in Dinklage, Germany, my German friend Markus Graw has placed a bouquet of flowers at the memorial. There are always ten flowers, one for each man in the crew.
