1 Jan 1844:Darling ALLEN Sr., appointed guardian of William and Parmelia Maddox, minor orphans Benjamin Maddox; securities James SMITH and Darling ALLEN Jr.
Benjamin was married to Lucy J. Smith, daughter of Anthony Trabue Smith, who died in Fayette Co., TN.It appears that Anthony had guardianship of his grandchildren, children of his daughter Lucy.We still have not determined where and when either Benjamin and Lucy died.
This Maddox line really has me stumped.I had always felt that Benjamin was either a son or nephew of Wilson Maddox who died in Madison Co., AL.Benjamin showed up on numerous records in Madison AL with Wilson's son George, and sons-in-law William and Lewis Finley.Lewis was married to Wilson's daughter Parmelia, and William was married to Elizabeth Wilson Maddox.
Following this lead it was determined that Wilson Maddox's first wife was Betsy Smith, daughter of George Smith. In his will was listed heirs, Caroline and George Maddox, children of his daughter Betsy Maddox. The remainder of the children were by an unidentified second wife.Anthony Trabue Smith was Betsy Smith Maddox's brother, and had become guardian of Martha, Elizabeth Wilson, and Thomas Maddox when Wilson died. Caroline was married to Darling Allen Sr, who had become the guardian of Benjamin and Lucy's children in Fayette Co., TN.
Now to my delimma. Was there two Benjamin Maddoxes in Madison Co., AL at the same time? Our Benjamin married Lucy J. Smith on December 24, 1823.He was a JP and a constable. In the 1830 census he's listed next door to Anthony Smith, his father-in-law, with one daughter born between 1820-25, one son born between 1825-30, and one daughter between 1825-30.William Ellis Maddox was born in 1828.Parmelia Cornelia Maddox was born between 1831-32.
On 17 Sep 1825, probated 20 Dec 1826 in Madison Co AL, the will of Abraham Franklin revealed that Benjamin Maddox was his son-in-law and also one of the executors of his estate.Benjamin was also the administrator for the estate of John Franklin, another son of Abraham Franklin. In researching this Franklin line, it was determined that the Franklin family, along with this Benjamin Maddox moved to Alabama from Columbia Co., GA, and that Benjamin had married Polly Franklin, daughter of Abraham Franklin, on 11 Apr 1813 in Columbia Co., GA.
So are these two different Benjamin Maddoxes, or the same one?The Benjamin Maddox from Columbia Co, GA is listed as the son of Joseph Maddox and Rebecca Hinshaw, and the grandson of Joseph Maddocks, the quaker who helped found the town of Wrightsboro GA.
Parmelia Cornelia Maddox, daughter of Benjamin Maddox and Lucy J. Smith is my husband's 2nd great grandmother. She married James Alexander Moore in 1852 in Madison Co., MS.The Moores had close family ties to the Lewis and William Finley families.I have spent the last 14 years building up evidence that Benjamin and Lucy were her parents, but until I found this particular guardianship document, is was all circumstantial.
William Ellis Maddox, brother of our Parmelia, graduated from Tulane Medical School in 1860.A family member has his diploma. He served the community of Peedee (Lamar Co., TX) and the Indian Nation. As far as we know he never married. He entered into the Civil War, and has never been seen since. He's been a mystery to several Civil War researchers.
Would love to hear from anyone who can shed any light on this new mystery.
