NORTHPORT | Dr. Sydney B. Poellnitz of Northport, died May 6, 2006 at DCH-Tuscaloosa. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at St. Mark Methodist Church with Rev. Ralph Smith and Rev. Sam Harlie officiating. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Memory Chapel, a Dignity Memorial provider, directing. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Vick (Tony) and brother-in-law, Bradley Gaddy.
Survivors include his wife, Keeble Poellnitz; daughter, Karla Griffin (Jamie); son, Byron Poellnitz; sisters, Mary Gaddy and Judy Mitchum (Neal); brothers, Julius Poellnitz (Sadie Lee) and Gerald Poellnitz (Lydia); brothers-in-law, Ramsey Trawick (Olean), James Trawick, and Keith Trawick; grandchildren, Patrick Griffin and Kaitlin Griffin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was born in Rembert Hills, Ala. A graduate of Linden High School, he served in the U.S. Army before attending the University of Alabama. He received both his B.S. and Masters degree from the University before attaining his doctorate from Columbia University. Dr. Poellnitz taught mathematics at Brookwood High School and served as principal before becoming assistant superintendent of the Tuscaloosa County School system. After his retirement, he served as a consultant for the State Department of Education. He was an active member of St. Marks United Methodist Church and the Lions Club.
Pallbearers are Jim Presley, Jim Hulsey, J.D. Neeley, Norman Carlson, Kenny Shipman, and Roy Maize.
Honorary pallbearers are McCollum Sunday School class, Tuscaloosa County Board of Education, Lions Club, Dr. George Miller, and other close friends.
