Thank you so very much for taking the time and effort to post all this information about the family of Moses and Martha ALLEN Westbrook.I truly appreciate it.
For the longest time my Louis Whitfield WESTBROOK had been a brick wall.My Louis had such an interesting but tragic life.
He came north to Wilson Co. TN in 1855 to study Law and attended college at the Cumberland University there. He received his Law Degree in June 1857.
On May 20, 1857, he married Sarah Jane PEYTON, the daughter of one of his Law Professors.Sarah was the daughter of James Harvey PEYTON, Esq. and Nancy Maria McFARLAND.Sarah's parents were both descendants of Soldiers of the Revolution who had received TN Land Grants for their service in that War.
Louis practiced Law in Wilson Co. TN.He and Sarah had 2 children:Nancy (Nannie) born June 9, 1858 and Charles W. born June 21 1860.Then Sarah, born Sept 27, 1838, died November 30, 1860 at age 22.
A History of the Peyton/McFarland family, written in the 1890s, stated that Louis Westbrook was born June 28, 1836.
At the beginning of the Civil War, Louis, then a widower, enlisted in the Confederate Army in the 7th TN Infantry as a private. He was soon promoted to Sergeant. One of Sarah's brothers was in the same unit and Louis saw him die at the Battle of Seven Pines.Louis fought on until the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, when he was wounded and captured. He was a prisoner of war at Fort Delaware until the end of the War in April 1865.
Louis's Service Records from the National Archives state that he was released in the summer of 1865 and was "left to walk home" to TN.Louis never made it back home to his children in TN.Guardianship records in Wilson Co. TN state that Louis died, at a date and location unknown, during his journey from the POW camp to TN.
The orphans of Louis and Sarah were raised by Sarah's mother.Nancy (my ancestor) married Jordan EDDINS.She lived in Wilson Co. TN until her death Sept. 15, 1923.She had 5 sons and 2 daughters.Charles followed in the footsteps of his father and maternal grandfather and became a Lawyer.Charles married Sally Lou WINFORD and they had 2 sons and a daughter who died young.Charles also died young, at age 33, March 27, 1894.
