The Hamilton Free Press, printed in Hamilton, Ala. started October 11, 1893 with J. S. CLEMENTS as the editor and proprietor. In November 1893, Clements bought out his compettion, The Hamilton Times and added R. N. TERRELL as his partner.
The paper is more a political newspaper than concentrated on world or national news. The editor was strongly for Bankhead and chose articles that strenthened his stand in the election and tore down the opponents. It was much more of a political attack paper than a newspaper. There was much mudslinging due to the election of 1894 (I chose not to copy that). However, due to the poltiical climate, Clements got in an arugment with TERRELL as well as Jason Ford (The Probate Judge) and other county officials.
July 18, 1894, R. N. TERRELL left The Hamilton Free Press to start a new newspaper, The Marion County News (also printed in Hamilton) with the support of the local officials giving him the legal advertisements.Due to the lose of the income from the legal notices, the Hamilton Free Press only lasted to the end of the year 1894.It was bought out by R. N. TERRELL and started the next year 1895 as The Hamilton NEWS PRESS.
