I recently realized I do not have as solid of a connection between Thomas Alexander Fontaine b. April 30, 1799 Colleton, SC d. 1846 Clarke Co., MS and his father, John Fontaine b. 1750 New Bern, NC d. abt 1817 Wayne Co., MS. as I do for everyone else in my Fontaine line down to myself.I have been digging into my files, notes, and researching more thoroughly trying to find additional "evidence" to strengthen this link.
John and Thomas are listed as father and son in numerous personal databases all over the net without listing any sources of the fact.I am guessing all the John Fontaine and Thomas A. Fontaine researchers are like me in basing this father and son connection mainly on family tradition that was passed down that John was Thomas’ father OR just accepting it to be so without question based on other family trees on the net.
In a July 1825 Mobile County, AL marriage record, Susannah Cockram Fontaine, widow of John Fontaine and mother of Thomas, granted permission for her underage daughter Polly Fontaine to marry Thomas Buzhard.Thomas was witness to his mother’s mark.Although the record does not state Thomas was Susannah’s son or Polly’s brother, it does strongly suggest a close family connection.
Not sure just yet when or if John or his widow Susannah ever applied for a pension for his South Carolina Revolutionary War service, but it would have required him to list his children on the application. This is something I am currently looking into.
Thomas’ birth date had to come from somewhere, but where?Quite possibly family tradition passed down. But, I can not help but wonder if someone somewhere has or knows of a Bible record or other source I am unaware of.
Does anyone have or know of a Bible record or anything else that might help further strengthen Thomas’ connection to his father John?
