I am seeking any information about my great grand MOTHER, JAMES ,aka, "JIMMIE" LEONA HOLDER. She was named after her great grand father, James Martin Holder. This Holder family had a propensity to use , normally male first names for some of their female children.
She must have gone by the name, LEONA, that is the name in the 1900Etowah Co.Alabama census .Leona was born in 1878 or so, at I believe, around the Hartselle, Morgan Co.,Al. area. Her parents were,GEORGE WESLEY HOLDER, and DRADY LUERANEY (STEPHENSON), HOLDER. They lived in Hartselle, Morgan Co.,Alabama.
*I have no place of her buiral or life after the year 1900, in Alabama City, Atowah Co.,Al. I have found no SS#, no further locations,no other marriages or death date for her. What ever happened to her after 1900, is a mystery. I have searched other counties, and any census I thought was relevant , but to no avail.I know only that husband, Lit Hand abandoned the family, and Leona actually abandoned her three little girls under a bridge in the Alabama City area, after Lit Hand left them. The children were soon found, and that is why the two oldest girls were adopted out.*
Leona was married to ,LITTLETON ("Lit") ARASCUS (A. or R. was used as a middle name initial by him) HAND. LIT A. HAND was from Heard Co.,Ga.in the community of Texas. He lived later in Camp Smith, Colbert Co.,Al. He later remarried to his second wife, LULA BELL (McBride?) .He died in 1947.
In 1900, Leona and Lit lived in Alabama City, near Attalla, Etowah Co,.,Al.Lit worked in the cotton mill there. They had 3 children:
1. OLLIE MAE HAND( later adopted by Wm. A. Thompson and his wife, Mattie C. Parker Thompson,of Jacksonville, Calhoun Co.,Al., around 1900. Ollie Mae married, William Monroe Fowler in 1914,Talladega Co.,Al.She went by the adoptive name, Ollie Mae Thompson Fowler.
2.BERTHA MAE HAND. Born about 1897, married Otis Gill, they lived in the Arab, Marshall Co.,area, near Boaz.Bertha was adopted by Lit Hand's own brother, COLUMBUS S. HAND. and Columbus' wife, Mary. in 1900.They lived in Etowah Co., and ten in Aurora,(about 1910) very close to Boaz and the Mountainboro ,Marshall Co.,Al. area. Columbus Hand ran a gristmill there for awhile.
3.(Infant FEMALE ),JOSSIE HAND, she is reported to have died in 1900, Alabama City area.No one adopted her before her death, as far as I know.
Please, if you have any knowledge about James "Jimmie" Leona Holder Hand, I ask you to please contact me.
