There are only two Lowe's that I know of in our line who disappear from the record during this era.
One is John Franklin Lowe, whose widow Martha Munday Lowe, married Dennis Shilling by 1850. The census of that year shows her, and all but one of her children, living in the Shilling household. It appears that John Franklin, who was Alexander's brother, came to Pickens Co. by 1837. He is apparently dead by 1/20/1848, when Martha patented government land in her own name. No one in the family remembers what happened to him. Some of his descendents thought the whole family had moved to Mississippi, but the above records disprove this family tale.
The other "missing" Lowe is Thomas M. Lowe (married to Mary), a son of John Franklin. He is on the 1850 census, but no other records of him are found thereafter. However, I think that I have recently located him in the 1860 Arkansas census. A Thomas M. Lowe and wife Mary are shown in Pike Co. His place of birth (N.C.) and her place of birth (S.C.) match that of the Thomas M. and Mary on the 1850 census of Pickens Co. They also have a child that was born in Alabama in 1851, locating them in Alabama at that time. I am currently in touch with his descendents, and we are trying to make a more definite connection.
The is one other possibility, but it sure would be a coincidental one! There is a Benjamin Lowe and family, shown in the 1855 state census, as I mentioned. He lived somewhere near Ethelsville. If you are familiar with Pickens Co. geography, you'll know this is not the area of the county that either of our lines were living at that time. He is apparently not from our line, as we have no record at all of him. I don't know when he is last known to be living, however. It sure would be a coincidence, though, that *two* Benjamin Lowes were murdered in Pickens County!
Does the Johnson Journal tell where the Johnson farm was, or name John Johnson's father? If so, I can find if he had a land patent and find where the farm was. That would give us a clue, perhaps, as to where the murdered Lowe lived.
