Hi! I am looking for descendants of William Massey Center and Elizabeth C. Fisher who remain in the Boone and/or Carroll County area. Believed to live right around the Boone and Carroll Co line. Although I do not research the Center family, the Fisher's are a main line for me. Elizabeth C. Fisher is supposedly the daughter of a Stacy Evans or Fisher b. abt 1798 in Greenville/Spartanburg Co, SC in the Dark Corner around Glassy Mountain. It is believed that her mother was Nancy Evans (abt 1777, SC-1855, Jackson Co, NC-now Transylvania Co, NC) who married James Fisher SR (abt 1753, MD-1832, Macon Co, NC-now Transylvania Co, NC). James and Nancy are buried in the Lake Toxaway Baptist Church Cemetery in Lake Toxaway, Transylvania Co, NC. Nancy was James SR's 2nd wife. I descend from the 1st wife believed to be Mary Hollon/Holson (DAR accepts her name, but oral tradition tells us she is a Clark). In 1824, James Fisher SR stated he had 4 daughters living at home in a Revolutionary War pension application. The oldest was 15. He and Nancy married in about 1804 in Greenville Co, SC
Stacy Evans/Fisher was listed in the 1830 Greenville Co, SC census as Stacy Evans with one daughter under 5. In 1840 Greenville, she was listed as Stacy Fisher and then in 1850 Greenville, she was again listed as an Evans with her children listed as Evans including the above Elizabeth. Stacy Fisher is buried at Glassy Mountain Baptist Church, Greenville Co, SC. I have a picture of her tombstone from a nice cousin!
From internet sources (Jolinda Center Whitney message in 1999), I found Elizabeth to be a Fisher. I have no documentation of this and am curious if anyone has a death certificate for her, Bible, or oral history. Born 28 Nov 1840 in Greenville Co, SC, she died on 5 Nov 1921 in either Boone or Carroll Co and is buried in the Alpena Cemetery in Boone Co.
Elizabeth had a daughter named Anna Stacy Center which led me to the Center family. Anna married Rufus Ferman Dill and moved to Oklahoma. A Lucy Fisher was living with the Dill family in 1880 Greenville Co, SC-Glassy Mountain. Lucy was married to a Henry Fisher in about 1859.
Other children of Elizabeth Fisher? and William Massey Center appear to be Stephen Decatur Center md. Maude Mallotte, James Alexander "Jim" Center md. Minnie, Myra md. James E. Jones, Pernecie never married.
The Fisher Reunion for descendants of James Fisher SR will be held on 8 September 2007 at Lake Toxaway Baptist Church (Lakeside) in Lake Toxaway, Transylvania Co, NC. This reunion has been held for over 80 years. We would like to extend an invitation to our 'lost' Fisher cousins to attend.
BTW, my gg-grandfather, Thomas Cantrell, with his 2nd wife, Charlotte Arcada Williams, also moved to Boone Co around the Lead Hill/Sugarloaf area. Thomas was first married to Mary "Polly" Fisher-daughter of James Fisher, JR and Darcus Bowling. Some of Thomas and Polly's children also made the move to Boone.
Any information on the above Center family would be greatly appreciated. We would like to make contact with our family that moved away from the Dark Corner (Greenville and Spartanburg Cos, SC/Polk Co, NC). Also, would like to know if Stacy was a Fisher or an Evans. Whatever she is, she is still family!!There are still many Fisher relatives down there that we are just now connecting into. James Fisher JR and his family made the move into present day Transylvania Co, NC where he and his father (James SR) and his sons and sons-in-laws hunted.
