I am hoping that someone here might be able to help me in my search. I am trying to research my Carter roots and it has proved to be extremely difficult. I will first give some names and birth/death dates to see if it might ring a bell with anyone.

I found that John P Carter married Mary Ann Hall in Roane TN on 20 Dec 1844 so I know they must have at some point been around that area. Their first 2 children were born in Tenn, don't know what county. It has been told by family that John P Carter may have lived in Monroe Co Tn prior to his marriage to Mary Ann Hall. I know he was born abt 1822 in VA, don't know what part of VA. His father's name was also John Carter born abt 1780 in VA. I John P Carter and family living next to a John Carter (age 70 and most likely John P Carter's father) on the 1850 Census of Yell County Ark. On the same census I find living nearby a Samuel W Carter with his family. I believe this to be John P Carter's brother because John P Carter named his son Samuel W Carter. There was also an Andrew Hall aged 20 (born abt 1830 in Tennessee) who lived real close to John P and Mary Ann (Hall) Carter but it has never been proven that he is related to Mary Ann. (haven't been able to find who Mary Ann is related to)
I find the John P Carter family on the Osage, Carroll Co Ark 1860 Census
I find the John P Carter family on the Osage, Carroll Co Ark 1870 Census
I find Mary Ann (Hall) Carter living as a Widow (along with Nancy, Elizabeth, Jesse G, Martha, and Margarette on the 1880 Census of Pittsburgh Johnson Co Ark I also find her son Samuel W Carter and wife Nancy E nearby I also find her son John Hall Carter and wife Tennessee P and family nearby
another note is that none of the family has ever really known what the P stood for in John P Carter's name. I found a land record from Yell Co Ark in 1855 (he was on the Yell Co census in 1850) for a John Philpot Carter. I am really thinking this is my John P Carter and that possibly his mother's maiden name is Philpot. I have no proof for this as none of the family can get past John P Carter really.
I find it noteworthy that the Sisco family (Emberson and Thomas Fancher and son William Houston Sisco and others) followed John P Carter and Mary Ann Hall family to Yell Co Arkansas. Their son John Hall Carter married Tennessee P Sisco which was William Houston Sisco's daughter.
My line for this family starts with Edna Mace Carter who married John Berry Looper. Edna Mace Carter's father was Jesse Green Carter. Jesse Green Carter's father was John P Carter (who married Mary Ann Hall)
I would really love to know if anyone has information on either (John P Carter or Mary Ann Hall) because I can't find any info past either one of them. My grandma (Gwinnie Lee Looper Atkinson) who was Edna Mace (Carter) Looper's daughter says that she remembers her grandma being very dark, she thought she was Cherokee Indian. I was young when grandma spoke of her and I didn't pay attention. I am 31 with 4 kids and into genealogy now (COMPLETELY overcome with it) and I wish I would have listened, but I do remember her saying she looked like an Indian.
