Looking for the family of Andrew Jackson Moore b TN in 1829/30
Jane Clancy Debenport, jcdeben@Vvm.com
This report is an attempt at trying to manage all of the data that I have found on the many Moore families of Roane co TN.The reason for this search is an attempt to establish the ancestry of Andrew Jackson Moore who found in the 1860 census of Greene co AR.
I will refer to the above Andrew Jackson Moore as (1).Facts about (1)and his family are published on the websitehttp://www.angelfire.com/ar/genealog/Eubanks/aa.htmlhttp://www.angelfire.com/ar/genealog/Eubanks/aa.html.This work has been done by a group of vitally interested cousins.I have sent in a lot of the information on Amanda Arantha (Allye R) Eubanks and her husband Andrew Jackson Moore (1).
Amanda Arantha Eubanks was born to James and Frances (Massey) Eubanks on 12 Feb 1832 in
Georgia. She was called Allye (pronounced "Allie").
1840 GA, Murray Co., living with parents; listed as female age 5-10.
1850 GA, Murray Co., living with parents; listed as Ally R., age 17, female, born GA.
In 1854 she married Andrew Jackson Moore (born 1830 Tennessee), probably in Murray/Gordon County, Georgia, as their first two children were born in Georgia, James William "Jim" Moore on 25 Sep 1853 and John William "Bud" Moore on 4 Oct 1855. Andrew Jackson Moore was a
schoolteacher. He also was of a frail constitution.According to what Joseph Henry Clark of Greene County, Arkansas, told his daughter Golvia Lewis (of Fayetteville, Washington County, Arkansas) "Amanda (Eubanks) married Jackson Moore, perhaps in GA - lived on the place that we know as the old 'Sherwood Batey place', but the Moores likely were the original owners. “
A.J. and Amanda moved to Cache Township in Greene County, Arkansas in 1859.Their third child, Frances, was born there that year. Frances apparently died young, as nothing else is known about her.
1860 AR, Greene Co., Cache Township, Dwelling 287, Family 283
Another child was born to A.J. and Amanda, about 1862 in Greene County, Charles E. Moore.
It is believed Charles died young, as no other information has been found on him.
Jackson Moore diedbetween 1862 (found on tax list) and 1863 (Amanda's second marriage) in AR in CSA.
According to family stories, “Jackson died of an illness contracted in Western Arkansas while in the Confederate Army -- probably Baxter county. He was brought home in a wagon. His family knew of his illness. Perhaps someone in Greene county had gone out to bring him home after it was known that he was sick. When the wagon approached, the boys went out to meet it - and to see their father who had been away from home for what, at least to two young boys, was a very long time, only to find their father had died on the way home--that he did not live to make it--but his body was in the wagon."
Amanda married Jonathan "Jont" Futrell 4 May 1863 in Greene co AR. (Amanda's application for a TX Confederate Widow's Pension.)Jont was born about 1834 in Kentucky. He was a widower and brought one child into the marriage, John D. Futrell born 1849 Greene
Jont and Amanda had one son born 1868 named Jeptha J. Futrell.
1870 AR, Greene Co., Cache Township, Dwelling 57, Family 57
Jont moved his family to Comanche, Texas between 1870 and 1877, where he died 4 November 1877.Family sources say he died as a result of fighting a gin fire in Comanche County. According to the daughter of James William Moore, this family left Greene County 24 Feb 1877.
Amanda lived in Comanche and Lampasas counties, Texas. She was living with her son, James
William at the time of her death in 1910. The Lampasas “Leader” published this obituary on
5 January 1910.
"Mrs A. L. Futrell, mother of J W Moore died Tuesday evening at 8:00 after an illness of
some months, though it was not thought death was so near. She was more than 70 years of age
and has made her home in Lampasas for a number of years. Her sons J W Moore and Bud Moore will be here to attend the funeral which will be held from the family residence tomorrow at 10 o'clock."
She is buried in Lampasas, Texas.

The genealogy problem:From whom did “our” Andrew Jackson Moore (1) descend!
The search began with trying to find all of the Andrew Jackson (A.J.,Andrew J., Jackson, etc.) Moores who could be found in the 1850 census who were the right age and were born in TN.
below find the current results of that search.
Jackson Moore (2) I have done some tracing on the family of Jesse Moore family of Polk co TN. In the 1850 census they are listed:
Jesse C. Moor age 55 m farmer b TN (note census takers spelling of surname)
Alley 57 f TN
Jackson 21 m TN
Nancy J 19 f TN
Nelson 18 m TN
In 1860, 3rd Dist., Polk co TN we find:
Alley Moore 69 f 2500/2 NC
Lafayette 27 mTN
Roger Moore of Houston shared some Bible type records with me.They are as follows:
Jesse C. MOORE b. 22 Feb, 1797
Alley J. MOORE b. 23 Feb. 1792
Governor Washington MOORE b. 7 Nov. 1820
Emily Caroline DOWELL b. 27 March 1824
Andrew Jackson MOORE b. 12 Jan. 1828
Nancy Josephine COOK b. 5 May 1830Nelson Lafayette Moore b. 1 Dec 1832
[I believe that Roger said some of this family went to Orange, TX. -Jane]
The MOORE-L Archives has wonderful information about Jesse Moore'sfamily.See the following listing on that site:
Barbara Byrd < firstname.lastname@example.org>
Subject: Re: [MOORE] Daniel Moore of Amherst Co., Va. Bible record
Conclusion: Since “our” Andrew Jackson (1) was already in Greene co AR by 1860, and Jackson (2) son of Jesse remained in Polk co TN with his mother in 1860 – Jesse Moore can be ruled out as the ancestor of Andrew Jackson Moore (1).
HENRY MOORE FAMILY OF ROANE CO TN
Family Tree Maker's Genealogy Site: Outline Descendant Tree:MOORE:From Ireland to Tennessee to Arkansas to Texas offered tantalizing names and places.Henry Moore (b 1802 in Roane co TN – d 1858 in Stoddard co MO) m 15 Jan 1824, Roane co TN, Elizabeth ANTHONY (b 1806 in NC – d bet. 1860 – 1870 in Stoddard co MO).This couple had a son Andrew Jackson Moore (b 1825 in Roane co TN – d 2 Oct 1883 in his home, 3 miles west of Bloomfield, MO) – m Margaret Evans.[Andrew Jackson Moore (3)]
I received an email from LeAnn Kellyrkelley@sheltonbbs.com that stated:“My Andrew Jackson Moore was the first child of Henry Moore & Elizabeth Anthony. He m 1) Margaret Evan in 1846, Roane co TN.Margaret died 1860.A. J. married a widow Isabel Adeline Duncan Sifford.A. J. died in Staddard co Mo in 1883. SO – this is obviously NOT our guy!
For researchers interested in this particular Moore family, there is an estate of George Moore in Roane co TN 1842 in which some of this Henry Moore family seems to be a part. There is a James Moore will WD 23 June 1843 – WP June Term 1846.In these papers, the heirs of George Moore are named. (James was the brother of George – and was an heir of George Moore's estate.)[I worked in Roane co – and made copies of these papers which I have in my files. If descendants are interested, I'll be willing to make copies for them for the cost of copies and mailing.]
JOSEPH MOORE OF ROANE CO TN
On page 380 of the Roane co TN 1850 census is a listing for a Joseph Moore family. The listing reads:
805/848Joseph Moore 53 M TN
MaryMoore 40 F NC
James A. Moore 22 M TN
Jane Moore 21 F TN
Lourena Moore 18 F TN
William Moore 17 M TN
George W 16 M TN
Andrew J 14 M TN
Samuel 12 M TN
Margarett 9 F TN
Mary A C 7 F TN
Hughy 5 M TN
Sarah E. 1 F TN
I have found researchers working on Samuel and Hughy Moore of the above census, but I have not found this family in the 1860 census.Although I have been unable to trace him past the 1850 census, Joseph Moore's son Andrew J. Moore (4) is not likely to have been to Georgia, married and had 3 children by 1860.His age would also not match the Greene co AR 1860 census in which “our” Andrew Jackson Moore (1) was 30 years old. Therefore, unless someone has more information on this, I am ruling out Andrew J. Moore, son of Joseph and Mary as “our” A. J. Moore.
A. J. Moore Listings in 1850 Census of AL
I found a couple of Andrew J. Moore's in the 1850 census of AL.One was in the Morris Moore household in Madison co.The head of household was born in NC as was his wife Debra. All of the children (from 22 down to 1) were born in AL – thus eliminating their son Andrew J. who was 19.The age was ok, but the place was wrong.
In Jackson co AL, I found an Andrew Moore, age 20, born in AL.He is living with a female named Ann – apparently his wife. So, I took him off of the list.
A. J. Moore Listings in 1860 Census of GA
I checked GA pretty carefully, as that is the earliest place that we are SURE of “our” A.J. Moore's place of residence. In Division 15, Cherokee co GA, I found Andrew Moore, age 18 in the home of Alfred and Zephery Moore. This Andrew was born in NC.
In District 8, Butts co GA, there is an Andrew J. Moore living with a 57 year old Jane Moore.Andrew is 19, born in GA.Also in the household is Jason Moore, age 11.I suspect that Jane is the mother, and the father is probably deceased.
I found no Andrew Jackson Moore who was the right age and born in TN in either AL or GA.
THE CURRENT BEST BET FOR “OUR” ANDREW JACKSON MOORE
The following query outlines the Moore/Parks connection.
“I am seeking information about the George Parks (wife Elizabeth) who was born in VA c 1774 (1850 census Roane co TN). The family was in Roane co TN by 1830. George and Elizabeth had a daughter Ann E. Parks (b c 1808 in GA)who married Samuel Moore 25 June 1826 in Roane co TN. Samuel Moore filed for divorce from Ann 17 Sept 1827. The divorce was granted in 1835. The marriage/divorce records are all I have found about Samuel Moore except that he appears in the Roane co TN census in 1840. He is between 60 and 70 years old. With him are 3 females: 1 1-15; 1 30-40; and 1 60-70. I have a little information on the descendants of George Parks. I believe that Samuel Moore and Ann Parks had two children: Serephina and Andrew Jackson Moore. Although Samuel swore in the divorce papers that he had not fathered any children by Ann, both of these children carried his surname. I MAY be descended from A. J. Moore (b TN in 1829). My cousin has just taken a DNA test. If "our" Andrew Jackson Moore is the Jackson Moore presumed son of Samuel of Roane co, then Jackson is indeed a Moore. The DNA checks out.”
Projected father of Andrew Jackson Moore - Samuel Moore of Roane co TN.
I have accounted for other likely Andrew Jackson Moores in the 1850 census of the correct age born in TN. The one above of Roane co is the best fit at this point!
I have almost no information about Samuel Moore except his marriage to Ann E. Parks on 15 June 1826 in Roane co TN - and their subsequent divorce.
Ann was born ca 1808 (1850 census-Walker co GA),the daughter of George Parks and his wife Elizabeth (maiden name unknown).
Samuel Moore was in the 1840 census of Roane co. There is a male between 60 and 70 years old - probably Samuel - making him born between 1770 and 1780. He has a woman the same age group in the household with him.
In 1827 (after only one year of marriage) Samuel filed with the TN Legislature for a divorce. He stated that Ann had gone to live with Jonathan (John) Haynes. This divorce was not granted until 22 Sept 1835. Moore claimed he had not been intimate with Ann during these years. Ann had 3 children during this time. Two of them, (Andrew Jackson and Seraphina) used the surname MOORE. The third was Patrick H. Haynes. We surmise that since divorces were very hard to obtain at the time, Ann and Samuel made up the story in order to get the divorce.
Ann Parks Moore asked in the divorce to be given back her maiden name as her legal name, however, she is listed as Ann Moore, head of household, in the 1840 census. I have not found Samuel in 1850 or 1860 in Roane co TN. By 1850, Ann is married to John Haynes and is living in Walker co GA. Jackson and Seraphina are in Roane co TN with their grandparents George and Elizabeth Parks. On 3 July 1853, Seraphina H. Moore, sister of Jackson Moore, m John P. Boyd, Roane co TN.
Virginia Kimes Pierce - VPierce851@aol.com has done much work on this couple. On the BOYD-L Archives, Rootsweb.com,she states that Seraphina and John moved into Webster co MO and are on the 1860 census there. From there they went to AR and are on the 1870 census in the Lees Creek area of Crawford co AR.The 1880 census showed Seraphina as a widow, living with some of their children. She does not appear on the 1900 census.
Soon after the 1850 census, “our” Andrew Jackson Moore was in Gordon co GA.(His first son was born there in 1853.)The fact that John and Ann Parks Moore Hays lived in a near-by county (they are in a diagonal line) would give a reason for Andrew Jackson's leaving TN and going to GA.In the 1857 Tax List of Coosawattee District, Gordon co GA, A. J. Moore is listed as “James Eubanks agt.”This ties him to the Eubanks family. The fact of his mother's being close in 1850 seems to be the connection that we need to put the Jackson Moore of Roane co TN in the place and at the time that we know “our” A. J. Moore was there.
So, this is the conclusion that we have reached:
Jackson Moore, son of Samuel Moore and Ann Parks is the same person as Andrew Jackson Moore - b ca 1829/1830 in TN died ca 1863 in north AR in service of CSA (4 children) married Amanda Arantha Eubanks (called "Allye").
I welcome any correction or discussion.New ideas would be greatly appreciated!
