I find your comments on the Worthen family interesting. Elizabeth Oliphant Worthen, the wife of John C. Worthen(am),was the older sister of my great grandmother Jane Farrar Oliphant. John Wortham and Elizabeth Oliphant were married on December 01, 1840 in Marshall County, MS. My great grandmother Jane Farrar Oliphant married Joseph East on May 15, 1844, also in Marshall county, MS. After the death of Joseph East, Jane Farrar Oliphant East married my great grandfather William Michael Bumgardner. They were in Jefferson County AR by 1850 census and moved to Saline County AR by about 1856. You will note in the 1850 census in Saline County that John C Worthen is family #221, Sidney is #224, John is #228, and John Jun. is #229. I personally think this is another case of a John that loved his name. I have a John Lewis that had a John as well as a Jonathan. It was not uncommon.
Note also in the 1860 census for John Worthen and wife Louisa A. you have a Robert S. Farrar, ie an Oliphant family connector. In 1870, Grant County, AR John Worthen is living with the posey family. In 1870 we find Eliabeth Oliphant Worthen is a widow after the Civil War and she has a 13 year old child living with her, Roda E. Oliphant. I wonder if this could possibly be a child of her brother,Thomas W. Oliphant who was also in AR about the time of the Civil War. I would also love to know more about this Roda(Rhoda). In 1880 Elizabeth is living with son Sidney and his family, and two of Sidney's sisters, ie Mary Jane Worthen, and G. Emeline Worthen.
