Hi, I work with the Madison County Historical Society and am one of the Editors of "The Madison County Musings".
The Hargis Cemetery was read and enumerated in July 1989 by Hope Creek, Kate Walden, and Maedean Miller Scott. The information was printed in the Spring 1991 issue of the Musings, with an additional one page update in the Fall 1991 issue of the Musings.
According to the directions given in that article, to find the cemetery: "Hargis Cemetery:This old cemetery is on the verge of being lost. The Society has an old enumeration of it, probably done in the 1960's or before, listing thirty names on markers and a lot of fieldstone graves. At that time the following directions were given:Hargis Cemetery or the Jake Davis Cemetery is about 1/2 mile northeast of the old Marian Phillips home, now owned by Noel Foster. It is about 3 miles south of Marble on the road to Big Sandy Cemetery."
The article goes on to tell how the cemetery is overgrown and how difficult it was in 1989 to find the stones in 1989. Some of the surnames of people buried there are:Hargis; Gage; Barns; Wall; Holaway; Sparks; Pitts; Martin; Tice; Disney; and Grigg.
If you would like copies of the enumeration of the Hargis Cemetery, you can order a copy of the Spring 1991 Musings from the Historical Society for $5.00.(You would also need to tell them to make a copy of page 162 of the Fall 1991 issue of the Musings...for the update information).
Or you can request copies of pages 19-21 in the Spring 1991 Musings and page 162 in the Fall 1991 Musings. If you choose this option, please include copy costs and postage.
Send your request to Madison County Genealogical & Historical Society, P. O. Box 427, Huntsville, AR 72740. Let me know if I can help further.
