Can anyone tell me who Jones Mountain in Madison County was named for?
My great-great-great grandmother was Caroline Jones, daughter of (we think) John Francis Jones and possibly Mary Osborn. Caroline Jones married George W. Whiteley, son of Samuel and Lucy Maynard Whiteley.
We know that John F. Jones appears on the tax lists in 1833 and 1834 (maybe even 1832), but then disappears. We believe he died in late 1834 or early 1835. His wife then married (we believe) Isaac Whiteley, brother of Samuel Whiteley.
There was a large number of people who came to this area with the Casey wagon train, and I'm wondering if the Jones's were part of that; and also, if John F. Jones was in the area, did he also have siblings or cousins in the area?
Any point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!
