I'm searching for information on my my mother's father (my grandfather), James Richard Saunders (est birth 1860-65). Marriage License was issued 27 Apr 1886 in Randolph Co., AR (Pocahontas, AR) for him and Mary Ann "Anna" Cabler. She was b. 19 Nov 1869 in Randolph Co. to Frederick Hensley Cabler and Fredonia Tennessee Stewart (wife 1 of 3).
Mary Ann d. in Dec. about 1895 and was buried on Christmas Day at Hite Cemetery. Her husband, James Richard Saunders went back to the logging camp to work, caught pneumonia and died the following month.
My mother was about 8 years old (b. 29 Dec 1887) and her little sister Essie Lee was about 6 years old.
My mother's recollection of her father was that he said was born in CA and raised in a Catholic Orphanage. She also recalled that her father said his mother's name (?)was Owens (apparently remarried) and she and husband owned a newspaper in or around San Diego, CA. (Rememeber this is the recollection of an 8 year old).
In about 1898 or so, my mother and her little sister were reunited with their grandfather Frederick Hensley Cabler, in Polk Co., AR and he and 3rd wife raised the girls after that.
My mother recalled once meeting her grandfather's brother, "Ab" Cabler (Albert Nelson Cabler), who was a forman over a diving crew. He had gone to CA with the gold rush. He told her he knew of her fathers "people" in San Diego and would tell them about the girls on his return to CA, however he apparently died on the way.
Little sister, "Essie Lee" m. Jack Pierce in DeQueen, AR. No children.
The only other clue I have is that a person named Robert Warner was the "security" when James Richard Saunders applied for the marriage license in Pocahontas, AR.
Not much to go on is it? Some years ago, I wrote every orphanage I could locate in CA to no avail.I know it would be a miracle if anyone could put anything together with this little bit of information, but I will be eternally grateful for any information.
