John, did you learn anything about the SHARUM family? I have a bit of info ...may or may not help.
In Lawrence Co AR, around 1883, there was a Thomas J. SHARUM (SHRUM? possibly alternate spelling on the line) that had a CISSELL family connection.
T.J. SHARUM born about 1840 Daviess Co Indiana was married to Lydia A. LOUTZ b about 1850 Indiana, a merchant and banker I believe in AR and he bought some of my SMITH family land the end of 1883. Thomas J. SHARUM's mother was Rosa Ann CISSELL and his father was H.V. SHARUM a native of Kentucky, and an early settler of Daviess Co Ind. H.V. and Rosa had 8 children including T.J, a son James A who was killed at Shiloh, and a son J.C. SHARUM who was a resident of Portia.
I got this information from a biography on T.J. SHARUM on the Lawrence County genweb (Couchweb) ..and I'll be happy to share this bio with you if you can't find it.
Here is an excerpt: He journeyed through the Choctaw Nation and the State of Arkansas for two years, trading in stock and hides. He then established himself in business in Indiana for seven years, and afterward was a wholesale manufacturer of boots and shoes in St. Louis, Mo., for eight years, in connection with a brother. In November, 1883, he came to Walnut Ridge, his present home ......
Children I show for T.J. SHARUM and Lydia are Edward, Monte a daughter, and Myrtle a daughter.
This branch of SMITHs was connected to my McLAIN / McCLAIN family and there was an interesting story I stumbled on re a daughter of Christiana "Cristeny" McLAIN SMITH who had been married to a James SMITH that died 1870.
Christeny / Christiana's daughter Perlina A/ Polina Anna SMITH had married a John Thomas TEWELL / TUELL ..his mother was Delia Ann CISSELL, sister to Rosa CISSELL who was T.J. SHARUM's mother.
The story I mentioned happened Christmas Day 1883 at a Christmas Dance. A Lewis CISSELL (not sure how related) got into an argument with John Thomas TEWELL over a horse, somebody pulled a gun, CISSELL I think, and youong Charley A. SMITH (brother to TEWELL's wife Polina A. SMITH)jumped to defend his brother in law and shot and killed Lewis CISSELL.TEWELL took the blame for the shooting, (to keep 'always in trouble' young Charley out of trouble so goes the story) was arrested, tried and convicted and sentenced to 15 yrs in prison. Before he could be transferred to prison in Little Rock, the 'family' / SMITH brothers busted TEWELL out of jail and the whole family went on the run for the rest of their lives.
I have some related court documents. Recently another TEWELL / SMITH on the line... (which used SMITH as a surname while in hiding, but learned their history from grandparents) ...said that Charley A. SMITH wanted to confess to the crime and while trying to return to Arkansas he died in / near Kaw, OK area. (now under water I'm told). This is the area where Polina A. SMITH TEWELL also died.
Soooo, I've been very interested in any connection of the SHARUM family ...if there is one ...to my family line of SMITH / McLAIN. The surname if spelled phonetically could get lost in a variety of spellings to confound us in research. The CISSELL and TEWELL families, as well as James SMITH, were from Kentucky ..and I know the CISSELL and TEWELL families went to Daviess / Martin Indiana.
Which curiously enough is where Polina Anna McLAIN's husband John Thomas TEWELL came from (they married March 1879 Lawrence Co AR)..even though she was born and was living in Lawrence Co Arkansas. My McLAIN / McCLAIN line did have some history in Kentucky (and we don't know enough about it though we try hard) ...and again, curiously enough my great grandfather William David McLAIN b 1859 Lawrence Co AR (a nephew of Christiana McLAIN SMITH) went to Daviess Co, Loogootee, Indiana 1878 and brought home his 1st wife Cordelia MOSIER ...they married Oct 1878, just 5 months before Polina A. SMITH married TEWELL.
So you can see why I'm fascinated by this story and the fammilies ...there just are too many coincidences.
