From an article in "The Heritage of Uninion County, North Carolina" Joseph Stegall, 1812-1888, born in Anson County, NC in that part which was incorporated into Union County in its formation in 1842.He is believed to be the son of George Stegall, 1774-1846, and grandson of Moses Stegall, 1735?-1840). Joseph married Sarah Jane Hasty, (1812-1890), d/o Peebles Hasty, (1773-1859), and Nancy Haney, (1775-1840's). Joseph had a 200 acre farm south of Wingate. He is buried on this property in a small cemetery in a field. His headstone is still in place and readable. Joseph and Sarah had seven children, one being Alexander, 1840-1920, married Sarah Jane Hasty, a cousin on 11/17/1871. He served in Company D. 37th Regiment, NC Troops, CSA. A brother, Elie J., married Jane Ellen Nash. Elie died in the war.The entire family left Union County. In 1870 Elie J.'s widow, now married to James Trull, went with him and Elie's son, Noah, to southwest GA. After Joseph's death, his widow, Sarah Jane, sold all the properties in 1889 and moved with all the children, except a son, George Washington, (1844-?) who had married Sarah Catherine Holmes---just noticed that Elie and George W. served in the same Company ,("I"),of the 53rd Regiment, NC Troops, CSA as one of my GG-grandfathers, James Evan Ross--to Union County, AR. George W. and Sarah Catherine & familymoved to Gaffney, SC.I find all the marriages of the Stegall children, except for William F., 1855-1899, he never married, in the Union County, NC marriage bond book. Article says this information comes from the Joseph Stegall Bible.
