Thanks - My sister has been in touch w/Donna Gadberry before Here is our problem:We do not know if our greatgrandmother Georgia Ann Shipp is the daughter of Isham Cook or Jesse Shipp - nor do we know if her mother was Rhoda Gadberry or Elizabeth unkown.
All census show her as a Shipp - according to her date of birth & the marriage of Jesse Shipp & Rhoda Gadberry Cook - she should be the daughter of Jesse & Elizabeth - but she said she knew her mother was Rhoda but did not know for sure who her father was.Isham Cook supposedly died during the Civil war 1860-1865 - since Georgia was born in 1866 that would supposedly leave him out (could have been killed by the people after the war that went around ransacking places)Elizabeth would have been in her 50's if she were the mother - not impossible but unlikely.
The reason we went by the census of her being a Shipp was because there were other Cook children in the household that the enumerator put the last name as a Cook - why would they not have put her's as Cook if she were one.She was very insistant that her mother was Rhoda & not Elizabeth - unless it was just loyalty or not I do not know but they said she was not that type of person & it was years & years later & she still insisted that Rhoda was mother. Her youngest brother Johnson Shipp who is a known child of Rhoda & Jesse was teasing her one time & told her she was acting just like a Cook & was told if that was so then that would make his mother a !!!!! - he got so mad he ran off from home for about 3 days.Either they did not know the marriage date of Feb - 1868 of Rhoda & Jesse- or they were never told that Rhoda was not the birth mother of Georgia.
