I seek information regarding my ancestors George and Malinda Tong Counts. Family lore, and some Van Buren Co. information suggests George was responsible for the location of the county seat at Clinton, having purchased land and donated it in the mid 1840s for that purpose.
George Counts was an elected representative to the Arkansas legislature in the 1840s, among other things.
My concern is that I find no evidence that the Counts family ever actually lived in Clinton. In 1840 they lived in Griggs, in 1850 they lived in Red River, and then they left, heading for California (another story, another time).
Can anyone help me to understand WHY the county seat needed to be moved to Clinton, and where I might look to find some evidence that the Counts family lived in Clinton? I have been to Clinton, pored over a lot of the cemetery records, etc., to no avail. (All but one of their sons died before they left Arkansas, so they've got to be somewhere!)
