Prairie Grove, AR, is on US-62 southwest of Fayetteville. You can get there on US-62 from Oklahoma, also, but not from the north or the south.
In Prairie Grove, there is a Civil War Battlefield Park with a museum and several restored buildings. There is a Presbyterian church next to the park and on the highway -- the cemetery is on the west side of the church.
This area was first "officially" occupied by whites in 1828. Prior to that, what is now Washington County was Cherokee land.My Cox and Buchanan ancestors were among the first settlers. All were strong Cumberland Presbyterians and many of them were ministers. Most of the Prairie Grove area was the homestead of Rev. Andrew "Buck" Buchanan. These first settlers established the a college in Cane Hill (just to the south of Prairie Grove), which was the first college to grant a higher education degree in Arkansas.
