Hi Charlotte, You and I have talked in the past ..been a few years I think..re Howell McLAIN. At least I think it was you, had a Hal or Howell that was in Arkansas, maybe even in Newport, Jackson Co AR where some of my McLAIN line lived. (William David McLAIN b 1859 Lawrence Co AR, son of John Henry McLAIN b 1835-37 TN, son of Charles McLAIN, came before 1850 to Lawrence Co from TN)
A cousin in WY told me last night that someone has 'posted' to LDS records on Squire McLAIN and wife Melinda Caroline HARDIN (done a 'sealing' on LDS, something I don't understand) and the name of the contributor no longer shows on LDS site, FamilySearch.org. So that's why I got on the boards this morning ..to see who might have been researching that line.
Led astray, lol, as often happens and saw your posting. Looking at your postings, you were asking questions about MARTIN in Woodruff County and I also want to question you about that line.Let me explain a bit to give you the various surnames and how they all link up .............
Before 1870, in that area of AR where Monroe, St Francis and Woodruff Counties all come together, my COOPER, ANDREWS (Anders) and MUNNS / Muns lines had property. There was a connection I don't yet understand with the MARTINs.John W.C. COOPER married 2nd to Rachel MARTIN. She was from another county but he lived in Monroe County near where his father's land had been (Benson G. COOPER b about 1811-1813 SC and wife Delphia LINDSEY who came to this part of AR in 1845. Brothers also came to AR and elsewhere, like AL & TN).
John W.C.'s brother Dillard L. COOPER was my great great grandfather in his last marriage to Parthenia ANDREWS / ANDERS, HOUSE, HOLMUN, COOPER ..she was born about 1835 Wilkes / Lincoln Co Georgia and came with her siblings and their parents (about 1855) from GA to ST Francis Co / Monroe Co AR.Her youngest sister, Henrietta (Henryetta) Elizabeth ANDREWS b GA married 1st to Samuel Riley MUNNS who died Civil War (shown 1860 in his father's household, James & Frances MUNNS).
Henrietta's MUNNS spouse died Civil War and in 1870 she is married to James MARTIN and has 3 children and is living near her sister Mary Catherine ANDREWS who is married to Andrew J. MUNNS. I have never found the marriage records of Mary Catherine to Andrew MUNNS ...nor Henrietta's marriage to a James MARTIN, shown in 1870 as a physician surgeon. And then by 1880, they both disappear.
Could these MARTINs be part of your MARTIN line??
Last month I was in Monroe Co doing research. At the courthouse in Clarendon I found the probate records of Michael L. ANDREWS / ANDERS (estate still online mid 1870s, though I think he died before 1870) ...and oddly, it shows my gg grandfather Dillard L. COOPER signing as guardian for the MARTIN children (Charles and Robert Houston Martin) of Henrietta E. COOPER!!!She was also named by her father in records as Henrietta E. COOPER, a marriage I had missed. She also had a Leander or Lee Andrew MARTIN b about 1867 who must have died young. I don't know what happened to her child Josephine MUNNS.
So somtime, in a very narrow timeframe, Henrietta Elizabeth ANDREWS MUNNS MARTIN married a COOPER...maybe even Dillard L. COOPER. However, I know that Dillard married Aug 1876 (bible and Monroe Co records) to my gg grandmother Parthenia ANDREWS (Henrietta's sister).IF in 1875-76, Dillard is married to Henrietta, then she must have died very soon and he remarried to Parthenia ...all guess work of course trying to figure it all out.
So, I have MARTIN and COOPER connection, and a McLAIN connection also ...as Parthenias and Dillard L. COOPER's daughter Clara COOPER b 1878 Monroe Co AR, Brinkley, married 1898 as 2nd wife of William David McLAIN b 1859 Lawrence Co AR.
I do have a bio on John W.C. COOPER that mentions his wife Rachel MARTIN and her father was Samuel MARTIN b about 1790-1800 in North Carolina, died 1867 Monroe Do AR, married to a Rachel A. UNKNOWN b SC, died 1846, Faulkner County AR. I find an 1850 census record for a Rachel that I think is them and their daughter Rachel M. MARTIN ... in 1850 Muddy Bayou, Conway, Arkansas, father is Samuel, mother is deceased and there are siblings. I haven't been working very hard on this line ...lots more to do ...need to catch up on documentation and need to record her siblings found in 1850.
Please let me know what you think ...and if you have any McLAIN information that you have discovered.By the way, if you have a male McLAIN, there is a big DNA project (Clan MacLEAN) through FamilyTreeDNA ..a Houston based firm with lab at Univ of Arizona ...that has proved my McLAIN line connections to the Weakley Co TN line from Charles & Elizabeth.
