Remember that your cousin Marion (our angel) in one of her genealogy posts, wrote that she knew little of David except that the family called him "Uncle Scythe" and he "disappeared during the Civil War."
That seemed odd to me, since David's mother and siblings are in Wisconsin in 1870, and David is also in Wisconsin following the Civil War (son George Washington Lowe was born in 1868 in Hixton, three years after the War ended). Then the Lowe family picks up and moves to California, and lo and behold David Lowe is found in California. The records make it seem as though maybe the extended family more or less migrated together.
Now a thought struck me during a commercial break (we are watching TV, lol).
"Uncle Scythe" might be CYRUS. Cyrus L Lowe b abt 1844 is more or less AWOL after 1860. A Cyrus L Lowe of his age is found in Glencoe, McLeod, Minnesota in 1875 MN state census - which, if it is the right Cyrus, would be outside the circle of the family. And "Scythe" sounds like "Cy." I bet Uncle Scythe is Cyrus.
