Would like any information about Elizabeth S. HEPBURN, who gives her occupation as "Evangelist" on the 1900 Fresno Co CA census, Township 8, ED 16 as follows:
#316-328HEPBURN, Elizabeth S., head, b. December 1844, age 55, widow, 2 children born/2 living, b. PA and parents b. PA, occupation Evangelist.
The Elizabeth I am seeking was b. in PA and had two sons from her first husband, John HEPBURN, of McLean Co IL, who died there about 1875. Elizabeth HEPBURN married my gr gr grandfather Arthur CAMPBELL in Hyde Co SD in 1884 where they received land patents in 1887-1889. Arthur and Elizabeth CAMPBELL, along with her HEPBURN sons, were listed as members of the Highmore SD Methodist Episcopal Church in 1888. Sons Charles Murphy HEPBURN and John Roy HEPBURN came to California when grown and had families.
I am thinking she and Arthur CAMPBELL may have divorced, as she was claiming John HEPBURN's widow's pension on the 1890 Hyde Co SD veterans' census and was enumerated in 1900 as widow. However Arthur CAMPBELL was still living until 1901.
I would like to know if old 1900 Fresno area newspapers survive which might have mentioned evangelist Elizabeth S. HEPBURN and if she may have died in Fresno County.
Thanks for any assistance. Joyce Lawrence, Dolores CO
