Abraham J Groom

I am looking for Abraham J Groom.He is in Mattole, California on the 1870 census, but I can not find him in 1880.His wife was Sarah, he has a daughter named Mary who was born abt. 1869.He obtained a homestead in Humboldt county in 1876.Does anyone have any information on this family?Where do they keep the land records so I can try to find out when the land was sold?
