The copper Fisherman at Woodley Island was commissioned by the Fisherman's wives of Humboldt Bay as a Memorial to the fishermen lost at sea. It was designed and built by local artist Dick Crane in his back yard and moved by truck. The model for it was his friend Ernie Lampela who livedon Gunther Island. The monument is 35 feet tall and is very heavy welded sheet copper not cast but welded. Dick was the son of the late Dr Clarence Crane and his wife Ruth of Ferndale Ca. Ernie's house is now owned by former Mayor Nancy Flemming and her husband Mark Sandelin. Dick and his wife Sandy were living in Arizona the last time we talked to him.
