My father and his siblings were told that their mother "abandoned" 5 children in California when she married my grandfather and moved to Indiana (this would have been in the 1940s).No one can tell me their surname. I had hoped to find a useful lead in the 1940 census. Thus far, I've found nothing.I know this is a long shot, but if anyone with impeccable research skills could look up this family for me, I would be infinitely grateful!!!!! :)
My grandmother's name was Joy Ellen Wood (b. 1920 Philadelphia NY). She was the daughter of Leslie Ami (b. 1894 Philadelphia, NY) and Gertrude (McMahon) Wood (b. 1892 Solvay, NY).
Though the family originated in upstate NY, they relocated to Los Angeles when Joy was a small child. By all accounts, they were still in or near LA in 1940.
Leslie, Gertrude, and Joy (their only child) are easily found on the 1930 census. It appears Gertrude died before 1940.Joy, of course, would have grown to adulthood and may have been married by 1940.I don't know what her surname would have been in this year.I only know her maiden name and later married name.
I cannot locate Leslie or Joy Wood in LA in 1940.
I did, however, find Gertrude's mother (Margaret McMahon b. 1866 Germany) and brother (John T. McMahon b. 1887 NY) residing together in Los Angeles in 1940.
