I'd say Charles Sr. died after 1900 but before the 1910 Census.I looked for his death online, in Ancestry and Family Search but didn't find it.
There's a wonderful web site called San Francisco Genealogy, www.sfgenealogy.com/sf/sfdata.htm which contines many sources for death records.
However, the San Francisco earthquake and fire happened in 1908 and if he died before then, the record could have been destroyed.

He's not listed in findagrave.com. There are MANY cemeteries in San Francisco County and they're listed on the San Francisco Genealogy web site.
