Is anyone missing a "J.O. Sweet", "J. Oscar Sweet", "John O. Sweet" or "John Oscar Sweet"?
I'm looking for any information, esp. siblings and ancestry, on JOHN OSCAR SWEET, born about 1832 (possibly in NY). He could have come to California as early as the Gold Rush, with or without his parents, "'round the horn" or "by covered wagon". We know little about him before 1860.
In the Census of that year, he is listed as a saloonkeeper outside of Paso Robles, CA. He married in 1861 to Luisa Smith and had several children. They ranched along the headwaters of the Salinas River, raising cattle and sheep. He died 23 Dec 1871 in Pozo, San Luis Obispo County, CA leaving his widow and young children.
--Could he be a son of John Sweet (b.1804) and his wife, Sophina?? They are listed in the 1850 Census of Big Grove, Kendall County, IL with a son named "John Oscar", among others; but, the birth dates don't exactly match.
Any information, theories or advice would be appreciated.
