William A. Field was living in Shasta Co., California from 1900 to 1920, per the census records, with his wife Mattie E. (born NC, Feb. 1856). The 1900 census states William was born in May 1853, but this can't be right. He must have been born in May, 1852, or earlier. They were married c. 1887, and had no children.
William was the fourth of four sons born to William Field (c.1820-1852) and his wife Cleopatra L. Henley (1824-1907). The sons were Julius Eugene Field (c.1847-aft. 1880), Stephen Augustus Field (c.1848-after 1882), Melville Chafin Field (1851-1919) and William A. Field (c.1852-aft. 1920).
Melville was a Methodist minister, and was listed in Shasta Co., California in the 1880 census, but he'd gone back to North Carolina by 1886. I think J. Eugene was in South Carolina in 1880. Cleopatra, Stephen and her son of a later marriage were in Linn Co., Missouri in 1880.
Cleopatra L. Henley married William Field in 1845. She married Green B. Lamb (c.1820-1859) in 1858, and they had oen son Charles B. Lamb. In 1864, she married George W. Baldwin, and he died sometime before 1870. They had a son, Daniel Leonidas Baldwin.
I'd be most interested in anything any of you could tell me about the Fields who came out there to California.
