Robert Cecil Williams, 97, of Modesto died of natural causes Saturday at his home.
Mr. Williams was a native of Condon, Ore. He had lived in Modesto since 1944. He spent his life self-employed, having opened two grocery stores in Arizona during the 1930s and the Sonoma Market in Modesto in 1945. In 1944, he bought eight used motel units and moved them to south Modesto and established the Oak Motel. He expanded the motel into a thriving business that he operated for more than three decades until his retirement in 1976. He was a member of Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks 1282 of Modesto, Lions Club and Fiddlers Club. He served in the Army in the 8th Cavalry from 1924 to 1927. He was a world traveler, with visits to Central and South America, Canada, Mexico, Africa, India, Egypt, Puerto Rico, Barbados, the Bahamas, Philippines, Hong Kong, China, and every state in the United States.
He is survived by his wife, Beulah Williams of Modesto; daughter, Norma Harper of Modesto; and 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethel Church. Burial will be at Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel.
