I couldn't find anything on the Palmers or Ushers. Mrs. Ray Dix of the DAR typed up abstracts of early Stanislaus County documents in 1958, back when typing was manual. It is 300 pages and a labor of love. It has:
George T Carmichael m. Edna M. Palmer 9 Sep 1903.
William A. Carmichael m. Ethel May palmer 20 Feb 1904.
Wm. C. Carmichael m. Abbie Usher 7 Sep 1881.
T. J. Carmichael, James' brother, bought a biography in the 1921 county history. Most of the people in it were upstanding sorts, paragons of virtue and industriousness. It says so in about four paragraphs of fluff per person. There are some grains among the chaff, however; their father was a Confederate soldier for three years.
I can't type the whole thing but I will mail you a copy of the page if you send me your postal address. You can send it privately if you wish.
James isn't mentioned in the 1857 - 1957 Waterford Centenial Booklet. He may have live doutside of town, or maybe they just wrote about people whose ancestors were still living there.
