Dwayne Lilly, a lifelong Modesto resident passed away January 7th 2008. After graduating from Modesto High school, Dwayne served in the U.S. Army for a four year tour working as a supply sergeant. A WWII veteran, Dwayne was also a lifelong member of the Native Sons of the Golden West, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Affairs and the Disabled American Veterans.
Dwayne retired from Stanislaus County 1983 after nearly 40 years of devoted service. His career in Stanislaus County began at the tax assessor's office, serving as a court recorder, then as clerk for the various judges, on to jury commissioner to assistant county clerk, and lastly Dwayne held the elected position of County Clerk Recorder upon retirement.
Perhaps his greatest passion was music and ballroom dancing. He led his own dance band for 36 years at the Modesto Senior Citizens Center as an accomplished pianist. He volunteered his time putting together a small Dixieland Band to play at various convalescent hospitals in Stanislaus County.
After retirement Dwayne was able to teach his grandchildren the piano and he and his wife Dorothy were able to travel, enjoying many cruises and trips.
Dwayne is survived by his adored wife of 55 years, the former Dorothy Peabody, children Rebecca Johnston of LaGrande Oregon, Dennis Lilly and Lona Lilly-Davis both of Modesto, 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Deeply loved by family and friends, Dwayne will be remembered for his loving kindness, wonderful sense of humor, and deep love for his family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. A memorial service will be held at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel on Monday Jan. 14 at 2PM with a graveside service to follow at Acacia Cemetary on Scenic Ave. www.modbee.com/obituaries
