The Rev. Archie J Mayhew, pastor of Free Will Baptist Church in Modesto died Sunday at Doctors medical Center.
The Rev. Mayhew lived in Modesto for 32 years and for the past six years served the Free Will congregation. Previously he spent more than 17 years as a missionary in Ivory Coast, West Africa.
"Archie was 27 years old when he was converted and he was just an evangelical at heart" , according to his wife, Sarah H Mayhew of Modesto. "The Lord called him to go to Ivory Coast and that's where he was happiest. Most of our work was village work. We would go and teach in the villages".
The Rev. Doice McAlister of the Turlock Free Will Baptist Church said Rev. Mayhew also reached many couples with his ministry. As recently as a month ago he was counseling husbands and wives in their relationships.
The Rev. Mayhew was born May 10, 1926 in St. Cloud, Minnesota and lived in Modesto from the time he was 12. He served in the Navy during World War II.
In addition to his wife, Rev. Mayhew is survived by his children, Jerry D Mayhew, Cheryl D. Alvernaz and Merry D. Rorabaugh, all of Modesto, and Larry D Mayhew of Bowling Green, Kentucky; and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 10 AM Friday at the free Will Baptist Church, 233 E. Orangeburg Ave., Modesto. Burial will be at Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson. Lakewood funeral home [is] in charge of arrangements.
