Thought I would send this over. When using Ancestry.com you can use * as a wild card.Only for the ending.Such as: when looking for an Alexander I always put in Alex*, Frances Franc* and when searching a likely misspelled surname. The only trick is you have to enter at least 3 letters.Such as Mal*.This covers many spellings the soundex would miss. Plus they dont soundex the first name at all. You can also look with just a given name or place of birth, when you know the exact location they should be at.Dont use year of birth or place of birth for the 1920 or 1930 census unless they are head of household. Many states (but not all) dont have place of birth for other members of h/h and when you put one in, it comes up a 'no find'. Ancestry give you this option but then it goofs up the search.Great!! Ancestry can be tricky to find what your looking for but once you get the hang of it, it is very useful.
