Deceased Name: REAMES , GRETCHEN ELLEN
April 1, 1910 - November 1, 2003 Gretchen Reames was born in Dexter, New Mexico. Her mother died when she was five years old, and she and her older sister Roseanne were raised by their father and aunt. She received a bachelor's degree from New Mexico A&M. After teaching for two years in Mountainair, New Mexico (where she taught Spanish to students who could speak it better than she - so she said), on June 14, 1933 she married Mark Edson Reames, whom she had met in college. They had two children: Mark Reames, Jr. in 1934, and Fred Reames in 1940. After living in El Paso and Albuquerque, Gretchen and Mark moved to Denver in 1945, where they lived 56 years until Mark's death in 2001. That summer, Gretchen's son Fred moved her to be near his home in Madison, Wisconsin, where she died after a short illness. Gretchen was an active volunteer, including in Cub Scouts, Parent-Teacher Association, in her churches: Emmanuel Methodist and Applewood Methodist, and for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). She enjoyed reading, bridge and golf. She learned how to cook Mexican food long before it became popular, and insisted that both her daughters-in-law learn how to cook enchiladas for her sons. Gretchen and Mark traveled widely in the '70s and '80s. She often opened her home for student visitors from abroad. Gretchen's joy and good humor will be missed by her family and by many friends. Contributions to her memory should be sent to UNICEF. A date has not yet been set for a service in her memory.
