I don't know HOW we are connected, but I'm sure we are. My 4th g-grandparents were John Barcus, b. 1755-1774, and Frances Ann Pratt (2nd wife), b. 1791, MD, d. 1878, MD.
They lived in the Denton area of Caroline County, MD., about 7 miles from Milford, Delaware, which is in both Kent & Sussex Counties.
They had 5 children: Ethelinda Barcus, b. 1815; married John E. Starkey, 1838; d. 1860-70. Eleanor T. Barcus, b. 1816, MD; married Wm. I. Seward, 1832, MD. John Charles Montgomery Barkhurst, b. 1818, MD; married Mary Barkhurst (cousin?), 1839, OH; d. 1901, OH. William Barcus, b. 1820, MD; married Eliza Turner, 1847, MD; d. 1892.
From John's will, signed 1833, probated 1837, in Caroline Co., MD, the children from his first wife (name unknown) were: Anna married unknown Caggs, (listed in will as Anna Caggs) Ebenezer Elizabeth married John Clark, 1813, Caroline Co., MD. John Maria Mary O. married John O. Harnet (both named in will) Nancy married Samuel Gelin, 1813, Caroline Co., MD. Rebecca Sarah married William Emory, 1816, Kent Co., DE. Sewel Barcus, b. 1790-1794; m. Nancy Strong, 1816, Caroline Co., MD.
A member of the Barcus family has old letters exchanged between John Charles Montgomery Barkhurst and William Barcus (brothers) which is how I know that my family, like yours used both Barcus and Barkhurst.
Let me know if you have (or get) information that connects our two family lines. Also, I would very much appreciate exchanging more information with you about our respective Barcus/Barkhurst families.
