I am looking for information on the parents of Robert and Samuel Mumford who I believe are brothers.I "think" the father may be John Mumford who died in 1821 but am not sure.
Samuel Mumford was born about 1798 in De. and his estate paper was filed/probated Feb 2, 1865 which means he may have died in 1864 or even perhaps 1863 depending...his wife was named Margaret according to the probate papers and a census lookup I got for 1850.He did not leave a will. There is a paper in the packet dated Feb 2, 1865 in which Margaret signs over the administration of the estate to a Elisha W. Cannon who filed the final papers on Feb 20, 1868 THREE YEARS LATER.Within the probate papers is the inventory list and debts the estate must pay and there is a curious entry:Note: against Samuel and Isaac Mumford in favor of Moley Burton 185.00Also Sarah Mumford note for the use of James A. Wolf "something" debt cost interest paid to Sherif 112.96.... so this establishes a link between Samuel and an Isaac Mumford and a Sarah Mumford.
Now, I've received a will and probate papers for a John Mumford, b. approx. before 1775 (best guess right now) and died in 1821.HIS papers begin with a will written April 24, 1821 and it was recorded in Book G on Oct 30, 1821.In his will he lists Samuel Mumford, who got the plantation called "Self Defence"; Jesse Mumford; Isaac Mumford; Hannah Mumford (who married Daniel Timmons who collected the money she was due as outlined in later probate papers); Polly Gordon who got a dollar; William Mumford who got a dollar.I also received a probate packet for a John Mumford Jr. who died in 1819 and his wife Mary was the administrix and a John Mumford also signed the paper (I guess as a co-signer) guarrenteeing that this Mary Mumford would be honest about settling the estate, etc.I believe this John Jr. to also be a son of John Mumford who died in 1821....perhaps this Mary remarried a Gordon--does anyone know?
Anyway, Robert Mumford was b. about 1806 in DE and died about March of 1861 --probate papers were filed March 7, 1861 by his wife Ellenor Hopkins Mumford. He did not leave a will.He and Samuel Mumford lived together over a period of years according to censuses and then were neighbors up until Robert died in 1861.I am thinking this Robert Mumford may be the William mentioned in the above will.He had many many debts owed to Robert R. Houston and I.H. Houston who it turns out were neighbors to John Mumford according to an old county map I found.
Does any of this sound familar to anyone?????Can anyone help??Thanks in advance!!!
