My paternal grandmother is Edna Wolford. As a young girl I was taken toSeaford,De. many times to visit a cemetary... My grandmother died before I was born. Her two surviving sisters I knew fairly well throughout my childhood. My understanding is that all four sisters were born in New Jersey...as were my father and myself and my brother. My great grandfather Frederick Wolford( known as Jock)I assume was born in Seaford...my brother and I are the only surviving members of the family and we have very little info to go on. I was told that Frederick's spouse...Minnie Jones was born in Ireland. My grandmother Edna was a little older than my grandfather..Alexander Williams and so this would place her birth in the last decade of the 19th century. I was also told that they were always Free Persons of color...not slaves. My understanding is that the mixed race people of the area intermarried with Indians or were themselves Indians. Any info you can provide would be very much appreciated. I have searched some census records and found a few Wolford's in southern New Jersey..although I have yet to find this branch. Any info you have will be much appreciated. I did find a Wolford line from Little Creek Hundred (DE.)listed in the tax rolls of 1699....Thomas Wolford and his brother..and then they seem to have disappeared... My other research suggests that intermarriage with Indians and/or white families ( as well as death)..could be the cause? Thank you for your reply.
