George W. Whiddon of Springfield, 36 year old labor foreman at the Wainwright Shipyard, was injured last night when he was struck by a hit and run car driver, according to Highway Patrolmen M E Graham and Marvin Cowart, the investigating officers.
Mr. Whiddon was walking along Highway 20, about four miles out of town, with his 34 year old uncle, William H Cale of Springfield, when the accident occurred, the officers reported.
The injured man lay on the side of the road for three-quarters of an hour while his uncle tried in vain to halt a passing car the officers said.A bus heading toward Panama City finally stopped and a soldier, Robert Helms of Tyndall Field, stepped out and offered assistance.
The soldier succeeded in attracting the attention of George Bullington of Bay Harbor, who took Mr. Whiddon to a hospital, the report stated.
